Sun.Star wins 4 out of 5 awards

SUN.STAR CEBU won the Best Edited Community Newspaper and Best in Photojournalism prizes in the daily category in the 2010 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards given last night.
A sister-publication, Sun.Star Davao, was awarded Best in Business and Economic Reporting and Best in Science and Environmental Reporting in the daily category.
The Civic Journalism Community Press Awards, which are given jointly by the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) and The Coca-Cola Export Corp. (TCCEC), aim to recognize community papers excelling in the field of civic journalism.
There are five awards under the daily and weekly categories—Best Edited Community
Newspaper, Best in Photojournalism, Best in Business and Economic Reporting, Best in Science and Environmental Reporting and Best Editorial Page.
Cebu Daily News won the Best Editorial Page over Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Last month, Sun.Star Cebu was also named Community Newspaper of the Year for 2010 and chief photographer Alex Badayos was adjudged Photojournalist of the Year in the Rotary Club of Manila’s Journalism Awards.
In the weekly category of last night’s PPI awards, Mabuhay won Best Edited Community Newspaper and Best in Photojournalism; Edge Davao won Best in Business and Economic Reporting and Best in Science and Environmental Reporting; and Baguio Midland Courier had the Best Editorial Page.
Sun.Star Cebu also received a special citation for the Best Booth in Civic Journalism, one of the featured activities of a nationwide gathering of editors and publishers.
The awarding was held at Traders Hotel Manila.
Sun.Star Cebu managing editor Cherry Ann T. Lim received her trophy for her win in the Search for Outstanding Bright Child News Feature for Children.
She was informed of the award last December but was awarded only yesterday during the National Annual Press Forum also held in the same venue.
She wrote in June last year a three-part special report on the efforts of the government and the private sector to meet the Millennium Development Goal of providing universal primary education to children in Cebu.
On May 17, 2000, Sun.Star Cebu was installed in the Hall of Fame of the Annual Community Press Awards after it won the Best Edited Newspaper for three straight years, from 1997 to 1999.
It no longer qualified for the Awards after that until the Awards were again made open to all community newspapers under the civic journalism criteria in 2008.
Sun.Star Cebu won Best Edited Paper, daily category, in 2009 and Best in Business and Economic Reporting in 2010.
